It is not we that are to blame, if in carrying out the bloody tasks of the war, we are compelled to do also the duty of the hangman. The cold steel has been placed in the hands of the soldier. He is called upon to carry it without hesitation. He must run his bayonet into the ribs of the enemy. He must smash his rifle upon the enemies skull. That is his holy duty, that is his divine service.
