A mosaic is a
picture made up of smaller pictures. I want to explore this idea using a dynamic mosaic
made up of written fragments that come together as a complete work. This work would
contain an overall shape, component cells or tiles, and a method of generating change.
This generator can be anything from random
to cellular automata to neural/fuzzy with various degrees of interaction. What is
contained in each cell can be anything from a single letter to whole poems to books of
poems, or pictures or just colors.
What I have created is a 4 by 4 mosaic
made up of blank cells, pictures and small written fragments. One can change the pattern
by clicking a "random" button. By selecting "sparse" cells with words
on them will have equal weight as cells without words. Cells can be locked or unlocked by
clicking on them so they won't get randomized.
Once a reader finds a pattern they like,
they can vote for a pattern by clicking the "vote" button. These patterns will
be entered into a list. When a reader clicks the "random preferred" button the
voted patterns will appear with the more popular ones appearing more frequently.
The reader can enter their own poem
fragment or send me a complete cell by e-mail attachment. With these I will create other
mosaics. I will credit anyone whose words or cell I use. I want some editorial and design
control, the mosaic not being automatic as I've seen this quickly devolves into a bathroom
wall.
